Introduction

You'll learn about the main goals of the course and why diversity matters in the creative process. I’ll also share my personal journey as an illustrator and introduce the tools and materials we’ll be using. Finally, we’ll review the workflow and break down an illustration to lay the foundation for what’s to come.

MODULE 2

The Power of Shape Language

We’ll explore how basic shapes influence perception and carry psychological and cultural meanings. You’ll learn how shapes relate to identity, stereotypes, and how to challenge visual expectations in your work. Through creative activities, you’ll practice transforming shapes and breaking habitual design patterns.

MODULE 3

Expressive Features & Stylized Details

You'll learn how to use stylized skin tones, blush placement, and expressive hair and accessories to bring characters to life. We’ll explore how color can convey mood and reflect cultural elements, all while keeping the emotion intact. You'll apply these concepts in a hands-on exercise by creating a stylized portrait using playful and intentional color choices.

MODULE 4

Cultural Inspiration & Research

You'll discover why culture is a vital element in thoughtful character design and how to research with respect and authenticity. We’ll look at how fashion, symbols, and historical context can inform your creative choices. Through a guided exercise, you'll create a mood board and develop your own culturally inspired character sketch.

MODULE 5

From Sketch to Final Character

You’ll learn how to plan a character from concept to pose, refining your design step by step. A Procreate demo will guide you through the digital illustration process, including how to add finishing touches like shadows, highlights, and effects. To wrap up, you’ll create and present a fully developed character as your final project.

MODULE 6
